"Who flies crates like these anymore?"

"No one. These planes were reported missing in 1945."

There is something in the skies…friendly or unfriendly it grips the obsessions of Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) and forces him to answer the questions. Something is out there, and while the government denies, Roy will disregard his prior life, including his family, for the truth.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a visual spectacle, an intriguing intellectually massaged piece of cinema, refined by a master director, who's attentiveness to characters and visual promote a viewers paradise. Spielberg knows how to give viewers what they want, and rather than insult them with just awing effects, he incorporates polished characters, likable and embraceable, nail-biting tension, all permitted by this highly engaging plot. Here resides a landmark in sci-fi; and rather just being another alien invasion flick, one of the many that plague that local video stores, Close Encounters realistically highlights the emotions and obsessions that would potentially haunt those who witnessed the phenomena of a UFO sighting. This is more psychological than terrifying, and surprisingly, this only promotes the intrigue. Years later, the box office would see record breaking results with the release of an alien invasion flick entitled "Independence Day"; a sci-fi thriller driven by awing visual effects, nail-biting tension, and this alone. Close Encounters is the opposite of "ID4"; while "ID4" attempted to terrorize, Close Encounters tries to create harmony with the two species. Spielberg would of course switch gears in 2005 when releasing the terrifying alien invasion flick "War of the Worlds".

Director Steven Spielberg halted viewers with his terrifying killer in the waters, "Jaws", a sensation that would become a significant box office success. Most director's disappoint with their follow up, confirming it was beginners luck, an ambitious filmmaker who incorporated all of their ideas and was thereafter artistically challenged. But then we are discussing Spielberg, a force of energy and creativity, who would give viewers this visually stunning epic, another impressive box office success. The next five years viewers would force their way to catch a glimpse of the rumored adventurous "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and the family-oriented "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"; both of which would score millions at the box office. Spielberg, one of the most influential, and reportedly one of the few billionaires in his occupation, would increase his funds with hits like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", "The Color Purple", "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade", "Always", "Jurassic Park", "The Lost World: Jurassic Park", "Minority Report", "Catch Me If You Can", and "War of the Worlds". Spielberg won Best Director Oscar for "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List".

Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss ("The Goodbye Girl") earned himself the role of Roy Neary through diligent persistence; the filmmakers rejections were dependent on Steve McQueen, James Caan, and even reportedly Al Pacino accepting the role. Fortunately a very effective Dreyfuss walks into the lead role, and as the skilled performer has in the past, he makes believers out of the audience.

The cast includes Francois Truffaut, Teri Garr ("Oh, God!", "Young Frankenstein"), Melinda Dillon ("F.I.S.T"), Bob Balaban ("Alice", "Bob Roberts"), Cary Guffey, and Lance Henriksen ("The Terminator", "Aliens").

Close Encounters of the Third Kind was nominated for eight Academy Awards: Best Director, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Art Direction, Visual Effects, Film Editing, Original Score, and Best Sound. It won one Oscar: Best Cinematography. Best Director went to Woody Allen for "Annie Hall".
