“On July 24th, 1715, in celebration of the marriage of King Philip of Spain, the largest treasure fleet in maritime history set sail from Havana, Cuba. The 500 million dollars worth of gold, silver and jewels came to be known as the Queen's Dowry. Unfortunately, in his eagerness to consummate the marriage, King Philip ordered the fleet to sail at the worst time of the year. And so, the great galleons, heavy with their sparkling cargo, sailed straight into a massive hurricane...and were never seen again.” “You married a guy for sex and then expected him to be smart.” Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson) is divorcing her irresponsible, financially unstable, dreamer of a husband Benjamin (Matthew McConaughey). Benjamin's obsession with the famous treasure the Queen's Dowry has become the center piece of their marriage and it's time to put an end to it. But then gold happens...or the potential for gold and the crew kick off another diving adventure in hopes of the Queen's Dowry. Director Andy Tennant resume includes “Hitch” (Will Smith), “Anna and the King” (Jodie Foster), “Ever After” (Drew Barrymore), “Fools Rush In” (Salma Hayek), “Sweet Home Alabama” (Reese Witherspoon), “It Takes Two” (Kirstie Alley), and now “Fool's Gold”. “Hitch” still remains the director's finest effort. The stars of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, Kate Hudson (“You, Me and Dupree”) and Matthew McConaughey (“Failure to Launch”) reunite for this unfortunately disastrous romantic comedy, that is even unworthy of these two over publicized entertainers. Rarely entertaining, never witty, and denying the previous chemistry that coexisted between Hudson & McConaughey, “Fool's Gold” is a yawn that not even McConaughey's glistening shirtless figure (the actor finds every excuse to remove his shirt and apply oily substance to give the appearance of glistening muscles) or pearly whites can resurrect. Furthermore, McConaughey's latest trend, his hippie demeanor, rejecting body deodorant, grungy, unshaven, and seemingly in need of a shower, is his least attractive venture, quite distant from his charismatic “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. And then there's Kate Hudson, barely noticeable, lost in the uninteresting plot, removing the reminder that she is the daughter of Hollywood's lovable Goldie Hawn. Sadly, I cannot say this one deserves the gold.
