Phil Weston (Will Ferrell) was raised in a competitive family, where his father (Robert Duvall) benched his own son to warrant winnings. It's time for payback. Phil, like his father, starts coaching a Little league soccer team and hopes to beat his dad at finals.
"Kicking & Screaming" will loose a wide audience, credited to it's innocent, family-oriented material, which unfortunately in this cinematic age, means cutting sequences to warrant a PG-rating, dismissing potential laughs unsuitable for younger viewers. As of recently, Hollywood rarely is capable of composing solid family-oriented comedies that don't claim a stapled on 'feel good' or flowers and cute animals atmosphere, and this effort is no exception. Despite it's flaws, including it's predictable conclusion, the film does have a secret weapon however: comedian Will Ferrell, now one of the biggest box office draws in the business, who somehow is capable of delivering laughs with his over-the-top antics of rage, or merely claiming chuckles whenever passionately running against the wind. "Kicking & Screaming" is certainly not a horrific effort, but merely a disappointing one; if not for Ferrell the laughs would be few and the entertainment value thus shattered. The existence, more accurately the knowledge that the film exists can be credited to former "SNL" comedian Will Ferrell. In his portrayal of Coach Phil Weston, Ferrell seems like he is still performing his "SNL" sketches, imparting his unique, random over-the-top humor, and spitting out goofy lines, maintaining his serious composure: "I'm angry! I'm spitting angry! I'm like a tornado of anger, swirling about!" His films include "Melinda and Melinda", "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy", "Elf", "Starsky & Hutch", "Old School", "Zoolander", and "The Ladies Man". "Kicking & Screaming" reminds of "The Mighty Ducks", "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story", and "The Bad News Bears". The film will mostly entertain the family audience and fans of Will Ferrell.
