James Cole (Bruce Willis) claims he is from 2035, and that the world met destruction in 1997 after a deadly virus wiped out the population, leaving only a few survivors. These few survivors have asked him to go back into the past, and uncover the truths about that deadly day. "12 Monkeys" is a bizarre, futuristic sci-fi thriller, resembling "The Terminator" at a more intelligent level (and lacking the action). This is the kind of film audiences will go crazy over, and everyone else ponders what the hype is all about. To many, this will be a modern classic in the sci-fi genre. Director Terry Gilliam's list of bizarre films include "Bazil" (Robert De Niro), "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (John Cleese), "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life" (John Cleese), "The Fisher King" (Robin Williams), and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (Johnny Depp). The always reliable Bruce Willis headlines the all-star cast, giving his character a paranoia and sympathetic edge. Willis' films include "Die Hard: With a Vengeance", "Color of Night", "Pulp Fiction", and "Death Becomes Her". The natural beauty Madeleine Stowe portrays Willis' psychiatrist, but unfortunately isn't given much to work with. We could have done without her role. Stowe's films include "The Last of the Mohicans", "China Moon", "Stakeout", and "Bad Girls". Pretty boy Brad Pitt ("A River Runs Through It", "Kalifornia") has been hitting home runs with his past few films, and "12 Monkeys" is no exception. His previous three include the terrifying crime thriller "Seven", the epic love story "Legends of the Fall", and the dark but riveting "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles". Pitt is the biggest surprise in "12 Monkeys", portraying a rightfully instituted maniac, and the result earned him a Oscar nomination. The Oscar went to Kevin Spacey for "The Usual Suspects". The cast includes David Morse ("The Crossing Guard", "The Good Son"), Christopher Plummer ("Dolores Claiborne", "Wolf"), and Jon Seda ("Boys on the Side", "Carlito's Way"). "12 Monkeys" is for a specific audience, those seeking an intelligent and riveting science fiction, rather than the usual explosive sci-fi thriller like "The Terminator" or "True Lies". The performances are top notch, the screenplay is riveting, and the result is satisfying.
