Will (Hugh Grant): pushing forty years old, never in a serious relationship, jobless as he's still living off of his father’s earning from a successful Christmas song.

Marcus (Nicholas Hoult): twelve years old, friendless, easy prey for the school bullies, and a son to a suicidal mother.

After having a brief encounter with a single female parent Will takes up a new approach to the dating scene…creating a son and attending single parent get-togethers. Through some turn of events, Will finds himself involved with young and troubled Marcus, an absolute nuisance he can't quite be rid of.
