"My understanding of women only goes as far as the pleasure. When it comes to the pain I'm like any other bloke - I don't want to know." Alfie Elkins (Michael Caine) loves women, or the pleasure they bring…he just rarely stays around, for fear of emotional attachment. Alfie, a vivid portrayal of a lonely playboy from director Lewis Gilbert ("The Spy Who Loved Me", "You Only Live Twice"), is at moments lightly humorous, briefly introduced by a semi-charming Michael Caine, and thoroughly observant of the promiscuity lifestyle, and most importantly sensitive to the aftermaths, illuminating our characters true inner sorrow. By today's standards Alfie the character comes off as a repulsive sexist male, controlling and domineering…but then again, this contributes to our dislike for the character. Director Lewis Gilbert resume includes "Moonraker", "Educating Rita", "Shirley Valentine", and "Haunted". AGE-DEFYING DUO - SAVE
$13 Academy Award winner Michael Caine ("Hannah and Her Sisters", "The Cider House Rules"), in his first starring role is surprisingly fabulous, seemingly with little effort pulling off charming, devious, and truly dislikable, and eventually self-pity, all attributes of the same character. Caine also received Oscar nominations for "The Quiet American", "Educating Rita", and "Sleuth". The cast includes Academy Award winner Shelley Winters ("A Patch of Blue", "The Diary of Anne Frank"), Millicent Martin, Julia Foster, Jane Asher, Shirley Anne Field, Vivien Merchant ("Frenzy"), Eleanor Bron ("A Touch of Love"), and Academy Award nominee Denholm Elliott (" A Room with a View"). Alfie was nominated for six Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor - Michael Caine, Supporting Actress - Vivien Merchant, Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Song. Best Picture went to "A Man for All Seasons". Best Actor to Paul Scofield in "A Man for All Seasons" and Best Supporting Actress went to Sandy Dennis in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
